What My Day Looks like Working from Home

My summer co-op for school is with a national charity and since they don’t have an actual office space, I get to work from home. #dreamcometrue

I’m not new to working from home. I worked as a freelance writer full-time for an entire year before going back to school to study public relations.

Still, I thought it would be fun to share what my day looks like working from home. So here it goes.

What My Day Looks like Working from Home

Waking Up

Every morning I try to wake up around 8 a.m., but usually pull myself out of bed around 8:30. That gives me half an hour to help Sidney get ready for school and set myself up in my office. I’m reading The Miracle Morning*, so I hope this changes soon!

Lately I have the same thing for breakfast every morning: a breakfast smoothie and iced coffee. I’m obsessed! I blend rice milk, a banana, oats and peanut butter together for a delicious, nutritious meal. Sidney prefers cereal or eggs, but sometimes has smoothie, too.

After we eat and Sid’s bag is packed, she has a bit of time to finish getting herself ready. This is when I get dressed in my usual work outfit of comfy jeans or leggings and a band t-shirt.

Once all of that is done, I sit down in my home office ready to go!

The Work Day

I have set hours with my co-op: 9:00 – 3:30. So at 9 a.m. I sign into Skype to say good morning to my mentor. Then I check my emails, pull up my task sheet and write out a to-do list for the day based on what needs to get done, and what I feel like working on.

My day is mostly creating social media graphics and teaching myself about social media.

I’ve taken a couple online courses to teach myself more. I’m only a couple weeks into my co-op, so I have quite a few weeks to learn how to help them even more with their social media. It’s really fun!

Any where between 12 to 2 p.m. I take a half hour to each lunch downstairs. Sometimes I throw on the TV for a bit. I also let my dog Penelope out back to do her thing at this time.

MyΒ Afternoon

Most of my day is dedicated to my co-op, because those are my co-op work hours and I get paid to work for them. But once 3:30 hits I usually switch gears and work on my own things.

I run two Etsy shops, do freelance writing and am currently building my new professional website. This is when I do that work. It all depends on what my deadlines are and what I feel needs to get done. Later today, for example, I have a freelance article to finish and send in and I’ll be adding new items to Tubular Retro.

Sidney gets done school at 3:45 so around that time she usually walks in the door and comes up to say hi to me. At which point she’ll go get herself a snack and chill for a while. Which is great, because I like to work until about 4:30 most days.

My Evenings

After I wrap it up in my office I head downstairs to start dinner and tidy up the main floor. We eat around 5 or 6 p.m. Then we take the dog for a walk, unless it’s Tuesday. Tuesday Sid has swimming lessons. Which means Penelope goes for a walk when we get back.

I like to spend my evenings watching TV and creating art/writing zines/creating for myself. I also like to sit out back if it’s warm out, hang out with Nick and listen to records, do yoga or one of my workout DVDs, or even go back up to my office to finish anything I didn’t get around to.

Good Night

I’m usually in bed around midnight. I hope to change this soon, now that I’m reading Miracle Morning. Ideally, I’d like to be in bed by 10 p.m. and up at 6 a.m. That way I can workout more routinely and also follow the different morning rituals laid out in the book.

And that is my day Monday to Friday.

  1. Lately, I’ve been going to bed around 11 and getting up around 8 because I’ve had later work days. I’m getting more done than usual but I know I should get more done in the evening or wake up earlier… But I’ll never be a 6 am person. But if you get there, WOO! Would definitely open up some time.

Totally! And I’ve been getting up between 6:30 and 7am lately! It’s been really great! Every morning we take Penelope for a long walk, and today we managed to get our shopping done before 9am.
